Processing fee

A non-refundable processing fee is charged for applications for residence permits, Icelandic citizenship and visa.

The fee is stipulated in the Act on Revenue Increase of the State no. 88/1991. 

Please be advised that credit cards and foreign bank cards are not accepted at the Directorate of Immigration.

Processing fee for a residence permit application

A proof of payment of the processing fee (bank receipt) must be submitted with all applications.

It is important that each bank receipt only covers the payment of a single application and that the applicant's date of birth and name are provided as an explanation for the payment, see here

An application must be sent in paper form by regular mail to the Directorate of Immigration or delivered to the drop box in the Directorate's lobby. Applications can also be submitted at the offices of District Commissioners outside the capital area.

Instructions for depositing to the Directorate's bank account

  • Application has to be paid for before sending it to the Directorate.
  • Proof of payment (bank receipt) must be submitted with the application or else the application will be returned to sender by regular post. This also applies to applications where the fee has not been paid in full.
  • Information about the applicant's birth date and name must be provided as an explanation with the payment, e.g. 01.02.1985, John Smith Brown.
  • Be advised that your bank may charge a processing fee for international transfers and if that fee is not paid separately the bank will withdraw it from your transferred amount.
